Roller Pump FAQ

  • How do you prime a roller pump?

Delavan Fluid Power requires all roller pumps be gravity fed during priming. Roller pumps need liquid in the pump while priming or the heat due to friction can cause rollers and seals to melt. Never run a roller pump dry.

  • Can all Roller pumps be directly connect to a PTO?

No. The 4 Roller is the only pump that can not be directly connected to a tractor PTO shaft. If you wish to use it on a PTO, a gearbox is required to increase the speed to 1800-2600RPM.

  • Does the needle bearing need to be greased?

No, it is sealed and ready to run.

  • Can a roller pump be run dry?

No, it will melt the pump parts.

  • Can I use Round-up with a cast iron pump?

It is not recommended to use Round-up with a cast iron pump. A stainless steel pump is better suited for this application.

  • Can Delavan pumps be used with Ethanol?

No, our pumps cannot be used with Ethanol. The internals will swell and lock up.

  • Are rollers installed a specific way?

No difference even if the ends are not the same.

  • What is the best way to store my RollerPRO pump in the off-season?
    1. Flush out your roller pump with clean water well enough to get rid of the chemicals used. (if need be, take off the cover in order to expose the rollers and flush out that way as well for a more complete clean)
    2. Use a light oil on the inside of the pump to coat the parts, if you can, rotate the pump for complete coverage
    3. For best storage, place in a temperature controlled environment.

    Please refer to ESR-013.

  • My Roller Pump does not have the same pressure it used to have. Why?

Over time, small particles can enter the pump and cause damage by wearing the rollers. Once this occurs the pump will lose the solid seal between each roller preventing effective pumping.

  • My pump is rusty. How should I clean it?

You can clean the pump with steel wool. Please refer to ESR-013.

  • What should I check if my pump does not flow?
    1. First, try priming the pump by pouring water into the inlet of the pump.
    2. Check the rollers for damage. If they are damaged, purchase a repair kit. See Roller Pump Repair Kit list.
  • What should I check if my pump does not turn?
    1. Check internals for rust and oil.
    2. If it still does not turn, purchase new bearings and repair kit. See Roller Pump Repair Kit list.
  • Why did the Shaft break on my Roller Pump?

There are a few reasons that the shaft can break on Delavan Roller Pumps. The number one reason we see is misalignment of the Pump Shaft to the PTO causing stress on the Shaft. This is similar to having a side load on the shaft. We have a repair kit for each size pump which contain a replacement Shaft, Rotor, Pill Key, Shaft Seal and Ball Bearing which could be used to fix it.

    Please see below for the correct repair kits and part numbers;

    4900 Series Pumps: RK-31410-RT
    6900 Series Pumps: RK-31610-RT
    7900 Series Pumps: RK-31710-RT
    8900 Series Pumps: RK-31810-RT

Also if the pump was run dry the added heat could cause the pump shaft to get hot and weaken. If that were the case you may need to also purchase the RK ROLLER PUMP REPAIR KIT SERIES which contains a Shaft Seal , Roller Bearing,End Plate Seal and 4, 6,7 or 8 Rollers. It is easy to see if the pump was run dry if you take the end plate off by taking out the four bolts in the corners and seeing if there are any melted rollers or seals.
