The list of frequently asked questions provides a quick answer about common Delavan products. It intents to offer a general overview, and a reference knowledge to check first before needing to contact Technical Support.
My pump does not turn on
- Check for power (Supply voltage +/- 10%)
- Check pressure switch. Please see ESR-008.
- Check relay – It will make a click sound if failed. (FB2/FB3 series demand pump)
- Replace motor
- My pump is not flowing
- My pump is not shutting off or does not build pressure
My pump is turning on and off quickly (Cycling)
- Relieve pressure by adding a return to tank valve or bypass valve.
- Increase the flow in the system with larger or more nozzles.
- Adjust pressure switch. Please see ESR-001.
- My pump leaks
My pump gets very hot
It is recommended to continuously run the pumps at a pressure less than 50 PSI. If the motor is getting hot, typically the pressure is high causing the motor to work harder. Reduce the pressure to 30-40psi.

Import vs Domestic Pump
Any pump with an ‘-I’ at the end of the model number is an import pump. The upper housing assembly and valve plater are not replaceable with a standard domestic pump. Pressure switches are interchangeable on all models and so are lower housing assemblies.
Demand vs Bypass
A demand pump shuts off at pressure setting. You can identify a demand pump by the wire leads out of the pump head (pressure switch). A bypass pump runs continuously when it has power. You can identify a bypass pump since they only have 2 wires out of the motor.
Are Delavan diaphraphm pumps self priming? Can they run dry?
Diaphragm pumps self prime and can run dry.
Which models are potable water safe (NSF)?
All models are NSF certified except import and FB3 (7871/7971) series pumps.

Please contact Delavan Techincal Support to discuss your application.
Can I adjust my pressure switch?
Adjusting the pressure switch may increase pump wear and tear which therefore reduces pump life.
Will the stroke controls damage my shaft?
No. The segments are made from aluminum which is softer then the chrome coating on your shaft and do not cause damage.
How do I install the stroke controls?
The stroke control segments or “pucks” clamp on to the cylinders shaft
What is a stroke control used for on a cylinder?
A stroke control segment is used to control the return stroke of a hydraulic cylinder.
Can I use my Delavan cylinder in single acting mode?
Yes. A breather plug is required which keeps contaminants and moisture out of the cylinder end opposite the oil. Please see ESR-021 for installation instructions.
What does single acting mean for a hydraulic cylinder?
Oil flows to move the piston/rod in one direction and load/gravity returns the cylinder back to its original state.
- How do you install a detent kit?
What does a detent Kit do?
A detent kit converts the valve to stay in the position the operator leaves the spool/handle.
Do Delavan Monoblock valves have load checks ?
Yes. All MBV series valves have a load check per spool.
What valve should I use for a log splitter?
Typically, a KOV30-NPT is used for a log splitter.
Can Delavan Monoblock valves be used/converted to Closed Center?
Yes. The MBV-CCPL-PLUG CLOSED CENTER is required to convert. Please see ESR-025 for installation instructions.
What does closed center mean?
When you are not using the valve handles, the oil entering the left side of the valve from the pump will dead stop internally and not return to tank.
I put the power beyond sleeve in my valve - which hole should I use?
You need to use both Return Lines. The one coming out of the sleeve goes downstream to the next valve body hooked into the inlet. The original return to tank outlet still goes back to tank.
Do I need to use the Power Beyond sleeve?
Yes. The sleeve is required or the back pressure can crack the casting.
Can Delavan Monoblock valves be used/converted to power beyond?
Yes. The MBV-PBPL ADAPTER BEYOND POWER, 3/4″ NPT is required to convert. Please see ESR-016 for installation instructions.
What does power beyond mean?
If you want to plumb another valve downstream of the first valve, you want a power beyond configuration.
How do you prime a 4900 roller pump?
4900 roller pumps must be gravity fed.

Can all Roller pumps be directly connect to a PTO?
No. The 4 Roller is the only pump that can not be directly connected to a tractor PTO shaft. If you wish to use it on a PTO, a gearbox is required to increase the speed to 1800-2600RPM.
Does the needle bearing need to be greased?
No, it is sealed and ready to run.
Can a roller pump be run dry?
No, it will melt the pump parts.
Can I use Round-up with a cast iron pump?
It is not recommended to use Round-up with a cast iron pump. A stainless steel pump is better suited for this application.
Can Delavan pumps be used with Ethanol?
No, our pumps cannot be used with Ethanol. The internals will swell and lock up.
Are rollers installed a specific way?
No difference even if the ends are not the same.
What is the best way to store my RollerPRO pump in the off-season?
- Flush out your roller pump with clean water well enough to get rid of the chemicals used. (if need be, take off the cover in order to expose the rollers and flush out that way as well for a more complete clean)
- Use a light oil on the inside of the pump to coat the parts, if you can, rotate the pump for complete coverage
- For best storage, place in a temperature controlled environment.
My Roller Pump does not have the same pressure it used to have. Why?
Over time, small particles can enter the pump and cause damage by wearing the rollers. Once this occurs the pump will lose the solid seal between each roller preventing effective pumping.
My pump is rusty. How should I clean it?
You can clean the pump with steel wool. Please refer to ESR-013.
What should I check if my pump does not flow?
- First, try priming the pump by pouring water into the inlet of the pump.
- Check the rollers for damage. If they are damaged, purchase a repair kit. See Roller Pump Repair Kit list.
What should I check if my pump does not turn?
- Check internals for rust and oil.
- If it still does not turn, purchase new bearings and repair kit. See Roller Pump Repair Kit list.
